Jeff Kaliel - Attorney Advocating for Consumers’ Rights

A partner at Kaliel PLLC, based in Washington, DC, Jeff Douglas Kaliel has built his legal career on representing consumers in high-stakes class-action litigation. Jeff Kaliel has developed particular experience in cases involving banks and financial services companies, contributing to positive transformation in banking policies.

Jeff Kaliel is admitted to practice in Washington, DC, and California, as well as in appellate and district courts nationwide. As lead class action counsel, he has successfully argued contested class certification motions and defended dispositive motions. Jeff Kaliel takes an analytical approach to discovery. He works with economists and IT specialists to analyze data and build models to determine how harmful business practices affect consumers. The models also help determine the appropriate damages to seek in court.

One of his significant cases was Farrell v. Bank of America, which resulted in a $66 million settlement and changes to the bank’s extended overdraft fee policies. He has also successfully settled numerous class actions, including a $6 billion suit against Ent Credit Union in Colorado for improperly charging overdraft fees.

Douglas Kaliel earned his JD from Yale Law School in 2005. Before focusing on private practice, he worked on appellate litigation at the Department of Homeland Security and served as a special assistant US attorney in California. Mr. Kaliel is also an Army veteran who served in Iraq in 2003.
